Pitchford confirmed the existence of Borderlands 3 by stating emphatically that “obviously, there is going to be another Borderlands,” which isn’t too surprising given that Borderlands 2 is the best-selling 2K game ever. What is surprising is that Borderlands 3 may not be the final title, as Pitchford stated that “we don’t even know if we’re going to call it that.” Given that Gearbox had revealed that the new Borderlands game had entered development less than a year ago, it makes sense that the developer has still yet to finalize many of the details.

Borderlands 2 art director Scott Kester will return as the art director for Borderlands 3, and the game will be written by Gearbox chief creative champion Mikey Neumann. For fans, this is all great news as Neumann was previously responsible for scripting the first Borderlands, and Kester’s return will undoubtedly ensure that Borderlands 3’s art style will remain consistent with the franchise’s signature comic-book look.

As for what Borderlands 3’s story may be, Neumann kept his cards close to his chest and joked “everyone dies horribly,” undoubtedly referring to the tragic demise of beloved mechanic Scooter in the brilliant Tales of the Borderlands. Having said that, Neumann did hint at the possibility that Scooter’s legacy will live on in the form of his son, Scooper.

Having Scooter return in any shape or form will be fantastic, but Pitchford did warn that Scooper may not make it into the final game.

Beyond those behind-the-scenes announcements for Borderlands 3, no details regarding the game’s release date or supported platforms were revealed. While it’s still too early to see any footage or art from the upcoming game, those wanting to get their Borderlands fix can do so by combing through Battleborn’s upcoming DLC, which will contain a number of Easter eggs pertaining to Borderlands 3.

With Battleborn coming out soon, fans everywhere getting more hyped for Borderlands 3, and Gearbox working on a number of new original properties, gamers can probably expect a very interesting second half to 2016.

Borderlands 3 is currently in development. No release date or supported platforms have been announced yet.
